This guide demonstrates how to integrate VR into your existing building review workflows using Resolve. Resolve is a powerful tool for reviewing large, complex facilities in virtual reality, streamlining the process of identifying and exporting issues back into Navisworks.
Step 1: Prepare Your Navisworks Model
Start with a Navisworks model. In this example, we’re using a robot manufacturing facility. Ensure your model is ready for VR by organizing it in Navisworks.
Step 2: Use Resolve to Manage Your Model
Resolve efficiently handles dense, federated models from Navisworks without performance issues. It’s designed to work seamlessly with vendor-heavy models.
Step 3: Import the Model into VR
Once your model is set up, import it into VR using Resolve. The app automatically pulls the latest version from Autodesk Construction Cloud or BIM 360 Docs.
Step 4: Launch the Model in VR on your Quest.
Open the model in VR using the Resolve app, available on the Quest store, and immerse yourself in the virtual environment.
Reviewing and Annotating in VR
Step 5: Enter VR and Review the Model
As a virtual avatar, enter Resolve and navigate through the model. Assess key areas for coordination, health, and safety concerns.
Step 6: Identify Risks
For example, spot a robot arm that could potentially swing and cause injury. Identify risks and make note of any issues.
Step 7: Annotate Using Speech-to-Text
Use Resolve’s speech-to-text feature to leave annotations. This allows you to quickly document issues without leaving VR.
Step 8: Persisting Annotations
The annotations you leave in Resolve are saved and stay attached to the model, even when updated.
Exporting Annotations to Navisworks
Step 9: Access the Resolve Web Dashboard
Go to the Resolve web dashboard and find the model you reviewed.
Step 10: View Your Annotations
Navigate to the "Annotations" section to review all the issues you documented in VR.
Step 11: Export as XML
Export the annotations as a Navisworks XML file from the dashboard.
Step 12: Import into Navisworks
Open Navisworks and the corresponding model. Navigate to the Viewpoints menu, right-click, and choose "Import Viewpoints."
Step 13: Select the XML File
Select the XML file you downloaded from Resolve. This will import the viewpoints, each corresponding to your annotations.
Step 14: Review in Navisworks
View the imported annotations in Navisworks. Each viewpoint is labeled with the annotation number, author, and issue text from Resolve.
Step 15: Manage Annotations
You can now manage these annotations like any other issue in your Navisworks workflow.
Step 16: Integrate with Other Issue-Tracking Tools
If you're using other issue-tracking systems that integrate with Navisworks, escalate these issues as needed using the imported viewpoints.
You’ve now successfully taken a Navisworks model into VR, reviewed it in Resolve, and exported the annotations back into Navisworks. For any further questions or additional workflows, please reach out to support@resolvebim.com.
