Using the Section Plane

Written by Beau Parker

The Section Plane tool lets you cut through your model along a defined axis, revealing interior geometry and making it easier to inspect spaces that would otherwise be obscured.

Opening the Section Plane Tool

Open a model in the Resolve web viewer. Click the Section icon in the right-hand toolbar to open the Section panel.

Active Toggle

At the top of the panel, the Active toggle turns the section plane on and off. When Active is enabled, the cutting plane is applied to your model. Toggle it off to return to the full, uncut view without losing your placement settings.

Overview Toggle

The Overview toggle (under the search icon at the top of the panel) controls navigation speed.

  • On: Zoom out and move faster — useful for navigating large models quickly.

  • Off: Slower, more precise movement and zooming — recommended when you need fine control while positioning the section plane.

Placement

Snap to Selection

Click Snap to Selection, then click any object in the model. The section plane will reposition itself to align with the selected object, letting you quickly cut to a specific element.

Reset

Click Reset to undo the last move made to the section plane, reverting it to its previous position.

Axis Buttons (X / Y / Z)

Use the X, Y, and Z buttons to change the orientation of the section plane:

  • X — Cuts along the X axis (left/right)

  • Y — Cuts along the Y axis (front/back)

  • Z — Cuts along the Z axis (top/bottom)

Options

3D Gizmo

The 3D Gizmo is a drag handle that appears in the viewport, allowing you to reposition the section plane by dragging directly in the model. Hover over a colored part of the gizmo to highlight it, then click and drag to move the section plane along that axis:

  • Red — X axis

  • Green — Y axis

  • Blue — Z axis

Toggle the 3D Gizmo off if you prefer to position the plane using the axis buttons and Snap to Selection only.
