Troubleshooting a Model That Fails to Open

Written by Beau Parker

Symptom

A model does not finish opening in the web viewer. It may appear stuck partway through downloading, or the viewer loads with no geometry visible. This tends to happen most often with large federated models.

Cause

Each browser sets a storage limit for how much data a website can keep on your device. Resolve stores model data locally so it opens faster the next time you view it. Over time, this local storage can fill up with cached data from models you have opened before, leaving less room for new ones. When a large model does not have enough space to complete the download, it will fail partway through.

How to Fix It

  1. Open a new browser tab and go to chrome://settings/content/all

  2. Find resolvebim.com in the list of sites

  3. Click the trash icon next to it to clear its data

  4. You will be logged out. Log back in to Resolve

  5. Open the model again

Clearing this data only affects Resolve. It will not sign you out of any other site or affect your browser data for other sites.

If the Problem Continues

Check how much free space is available on your computer's hard drive. Very low free disk space can also cause this issue. On Windows, you can check this by opening File Explorer, selecting This PC, and looking under your main drive.

If clearing site data and confirming you have enough free disk space does not resolve the issue, contact Resolve Support with the model name and a screenshot of the error if one appeared.
