Resolve supports a wide range of 3D model formats when you link models from Autodesk Forma (formerly ACC) and BIM 360. The rule of thumb: if a model opens in the 3D viewer in Autodesk, it will open in Resolve.
Which formats you can use depends on where the file comes from. Direct uploads and Procore currently support Navisworks (.nwd) files.
Most common formats
These are the formats our customers link most often from Autodesk, and all are confirmed working in Resolve.
Format | Extension | Typical source |
Navisworks | .nwd | Autodesk Navisworks |
Revit | .rvt | Autodesk Revit |
IFC | .ifc | Most BIM tools (Archicad, Tekla, Vectorworks, etc.) |
SketchUp | .skp | Trimble SketchUp |
FBX | .fbx | 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Unity |
OBJ | .obj | Most 3D tools |
STEP | .stp, .step | Most CAD tools |
Other supported formats
When linking from Autodesk, Resolve also accepts the 3D formats below. The file must contain 3D geometry; a 2D-only drawing in one of these formats won’t produce a model.
Category | Format | Extensions |
Autodesk | AutoCAD (3D, incl. Civil 3D and Plant 3D) | .dwg, .dxf |
Autodesk | Navisworks cache | .nwc |
Autodesk | Design Web Format (3D) | .dwf |
Autodesk | Green Building XML | .gbxml |
AEC / plant | Bentley MicroStation (3D) | .dgn |
MCAD | SolidWorks | .sldprt, .sldasm |
Point cloud | Laser scans | Appended into a Navisworks .nwd (how to import from ReCap) |
Don’t see your file type? This list isn’t exhaustive. If the model opens in 3D in Autodesk, it will very likely open in Resolve. If you’re unsure, give it a try and contact support@resolvebim.com if it fails to process.
Support by upload source
Upload source | Supported formats | Notes |
Autodesk (Forma / ACC / BIM 360) | All formats on this page | Any 3D file that Autodesk can view will very likely process in Resolve. |
Direct upload (from your computer) | .nwd | Includes point clouds appended into an .nwd in Navisworks. |
Procore | .nwd | Includes point clouds appended into an .nwd in Navisworks. |
Not supported
Resolve is a 3D model viewer, so these file types won’t create a model:
2D drawings and sheets: 2D-only .dwg, .dxf, .dwf, .dgn and Inventor drawings (.idw, .dwg)
Documents: .pdf, Office files (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), .txt, .csv
Images and video: .jpg, .png, .tif, .mp4, .mov, etc.
Navisworks project files (.nwf): these only reference other files. Save as .nwd instead.
Tips for best results
Navisworks: Upload .nwd rather than .nwc or .nwf. If you use Publish, check May be re-saved in the publish options, or processing can fail.
Still stuck? If a model fails to process, contact support with the file name and project, and we’ll take a look.
